The Name of Heru is one of the oldest Names of Netjer. Pictures of Him as a hawk go back to predynastic times, over 5000 years ago. His Name means "high above" and He is associated with the kingship of the Two Lands, of Upper and Lower Kemet.

Heru is not actually a hawk, of course. The ancient people of Kemet saw that the hawk had many qualities in common with Him, so it became one of His symbols. Hawks are noble birds, flying high above things and swooping down quickly to kill. They have great strength and stay focused on a goal until they accomplish it.
There are three main deities associated with the Name of Heru. These are Heru the Elder (Heru-wer), Heru Son of Aset (Heru-sa-Aset), and the Living Heru (Heru-ankhu). We will look at the first two here, and you can read about the Living Heru in the section called Our Nisut (AUS).
Heru-wer is an ancient sky god, the son of Geb and Nut and the brother of Wesir and Set. He is usually shown as a hawk or hawk-headed man wearing the white crown. Heru-wer defends Ma'at and carries out justice. He is like a veteran soldier who is experienced and wise.

Heru-sa-Aset is the son of Aset and Wesir. He is usually shown wearing the Double Crown. He is the young heir to the throne who is energetic, stubborn, and impulsive. He will do whatever is necessary to reach his goal. Heru-sa-Aset is like a young army officer who is still learning his responsibilities and the power that comes with them.

Sometimes Heru-wer and Heru-sa-Aset are considered forms of each other. Heru-sa-Aset can then be called "Heru the Younger" and Heru-wer is "Heru the Elder." When the Younger Heru matures and accepts the duties of kingship, He becomes the Elder Heru.
Here is a prayer for Heru, written by His son, Padjaiemweru:
Heru-wer,
Great Lord of the Sky,
Oh, Great Speckled One,
Power and Strength.
Power and strength are Yours to give.
Help us to uphold Ma'at,
Lord of the Burning Flame.
Grant us safety in Your arms (or wings),
Brother and Son to kings.
Heru in all of His Names is connected with leadership, royalty, and the ability to view things from high above. He goes face to face with His enemies to fight for justice and Ma'at. Nothing escapes His all-seeing Eye, and no evil-doer escapes His sharp claws. However, even though He may seem fierce, He still loves us very much.
